In my daily quest to find random and cool things about food on the internet, I came across  www.whatsonmyfood.org/.  They offer a free searchable database of pesticide residue levels found on different foods in the U.S. and the toxicity of these chemicals.  With both PC access and a mobile app, it’s an indispensable aid for modern shoppers.   When will China get something like this??!?

The website summarizes the kinds of pesticides found on the food:

Gives you a comparison for average levels in organic versus non-organic….

….and also give you the level of pesticides considered toxic to humans so you have a reference for evaluating the amounts on the food:

They also have created an app so you can have it handy while you shop:

BEST OF ALL, they reference everything, so the data sources are completely transparent:

China doesn’t have a nationwide reporting system for pesticide residues available to the public.  Even if there was, according to John Chapple, a Consultant for Sino Analytica’s independent residue testing laboratory, China’s food supply tends to be much more fractured amongst small farmers than the U.S., so a meaningful database on chemical contaminants would be difficult to compile.

“With no effective traceability, and with products still produced in small volumes by a large number of producers, little could be learnt from such a survey, other than to confirm that a wide range of pesticides are used here, albeit usually with relatively low residues,” he said.

China is the world’s second largest producer of pesticides and its largest user of mineral fertilizers. Preliminary investigations, like this one by Greenpeace, suggest that residues on food are a problem. While not all pesticide residues are harmful, it would be nice to have more access to this kind of food safety information.

Mr. Chapple believes the best way to protect from contaminants is to maintain a diverse diet. “The key is to eat small volumes of lots of things,” he recommends.

For now, the What’s on my Food? site is also available in Chinese. Only applicable to U.S. foods, unfortunately.
